ShearLock® – Engineered Slope Retention System

The ShearLock® Engineered Slope Retention System is an innovative and cost effective way to protect slopes from potential landslides and to repair existing landslides.

ABOUT

The Shear Lock® Engineered Slope Retention System is an innovative and cost effective way to protect slopes from potential landslides and to repair existing landslides.

Shear Lock® uses tried and true engineering principles combined with Shear Lock® Piles to quickly and efficiently retain unstable material and ‘lock’ the potential shear failure plane. (Shear Lock Piles are a Registered Design of Cirtex)

Many areas in New Zealand especially around road and rail infrastructure are marked by steep and unstable slopes causing landslides to block the road or rail network during frequent storm events. With the Shear Lock® system, the slipped soil can be pushed back onto the slope and compacted into place, then stabilised by installing Shear Lock® Piles in a predetermined grid pattern.

BENEFITS AND FEATURES

  • Prevents costly and time consuming cartage of slip material away from site
  • Fast design and execution due to extensive research of typical designs
  • Can be engineered to meet specific site conditions
  • Uses readily available and pre certified ShearLock® piles which are used as the basis for the ShearLock® design charts
  • Backed up by extensive Engineering research and computer modelling
  • Can be used for repairing existing failures or stabilising known potential slides
  • Peace of mind for road network supervisors and rail area managers that key sites have been stabilised

A significant landslip had occurred on the downhill side of the road from Colville to Kennedy Bay closing it to one lane. The integrity of the road was compromised, and the slope dropped steeply down to the sea. The challenge was to prevent further surface erosion, stabilise the surface, and blend in with the surrounding environment.
