Project Information

The Drury South Crossing development is a 361-hectare, master-planned commercial, industrial, and residential community south of Auckland. As part of the infrastructure works, Maketu Road is being extended to connect future development stages with the proposed SH1 interchange.

To avoid encroaching on neighbouring farmland along a tight boundary, the project required a vertical retaining solution capable of working efficiently within a constrained corridor. The selected MagnumStone retaining wall solution provided the engineering exibility and construction speed needed to keep the project moving on schedule.

DESIGN

A 161-metre-long, near-vertical Hybrid MSE and Gravity retaining wall was designed using the MagnumStone retaining wall system. Reaching up to 8 metres in height, the wall follows the alignment of Maketu Road and transitions seamlessly between reinforced and gravity wall sections – all while maintaining a consistent face finish.

The lower section was designed as a Mechanically Stabilised Earth (MSE) wall reinforced with StrataGrid geogrid from Cirtex. This provided robust stability and performance, effectively addressing geotechnical challenges.

Above, the gravity section of the MagnumStone wall created a clear zone for critical services. It also allowed the use of sitewon fill, delivering significant cost savings and reducing environmental impact.

INSTALLATION

The retaining wall was constructed quickly and safely using MagnumStone’s modular system, which requires no piling and can be installed with standard construction equipment. Blocks were delivered to site as needed, allowing for smooth, staged progress and minimal material handling. The hollow core of the MagnumStone retaining system allowed for easy installation of the aluminium fence posts within the MagnumStone blocks, maximising usable land behind the wall.

With its refined block design and hybrid functionality, MagnumStone provided exceptional build speed and exibility. Combined with StrataGrid reinforcement, the result is a strong, efficient, and visually consistent retaining wall that supports the continued growth of the Drury South Crossing development.

The MagnumStone system provided the following benefits to the project:

  • Combines gravity and MSE design for maximum design exibility
  • Integrates StrataGrid geogrid reinforcement for superior stability
  • Enables use of site-won fill, saving time and cost
  • Fast installation using standard machinery – no piling required
  • Consistent, high-quality aesthetic across all wall types
