Part 5 - Design standards, components and stability checks

In this module we will review the available design standards and manuals in common use and discuss the various approaches. Next we identify and name the components of a reinforced soil structure and proceed to identify the internal and external stability checks required for a safe design.

Part 6 - Soil types, facing & construction details

Investigate the influence of water on a reinforced soil structure, and drill into the common facing elements, construction details and how this feeds into the most common failure modes for reinforced soil structures.

Part 7 - Design program overview

In this module, we take what we have learnt over the past 6 modules and set up a real-life case in two of the most widely used design programs for reinforced soil structures. We look at a sample geometry analysed both as a Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall in program MSEW and also as a steepened slope in program ReSSa using Bishops method. We will look at the common inputs, what they mean and discuss the capabilities of the programs. This is not a comprehensive lesson on the use of the programs but will give you a good understanding of the capabilities and outputs of these powerful tools.

Part 8 - Review and Q & A

The last module is number 8, where we review all the course material and recap on specific content where the course attendees have requested more detail of tuition. We will also collect a number of the most common questions from throughout the course and address them in more detail to ensure the best understanding possible. We will wrap up with a review of the course outcomes and the suggested next steps.
